NOTICE – FOLLOWING PORT USER CONSULTATIONS, SJPA IMPLEMENTS BEST PRACTICES FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY OF VEHICLES OPERATING ON SJPA-MANAGED FACILITIES
As a key economic driver and a place of substantial industrial activity, the SJPA strives for excellence in the administration and management of its port facilities and the broad range of business activities conducted therein. Working together with users and service providers, the SJPA must ensure that the Port is modern, efficient and, above all else, employs the very best practices from a safety and security perspective. This includes adopting the best technology to enhance operational awareness.
To this end, we are undertaking the implementation of a new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system to monitor vehicles only (not individuals) operating on SJPA facilities. The system will allow us to more accurately monitor traffic on the piers in order to gain a greater awareness and understanding of traffic flow patterns and volume. Most importantly, it ensures optimal safety and security for those dedicated people who work daily in the area.
A trial run of the RFID system is complete and we are now ready to implement this progressive technology for all Port Users on SJPA-managed facilities and look forward to your continued cooperation.
Vehicles accessing Piers 6-11, 17-18, 19-21, and the Pleasantville site, are to be registered and assigned a unique RFID tag (with an anticipated life span of 4 years depending on usage). The tag activates once the vehicle enters identified Port Areas, and will deactivate upon exit.
Service providers will be given exclusive and confidential access to near real-time and historical data on their registered fleet including: which vehicles are on site, specific piers where they are, time of arrival and departure, and frequency of visits, thus enhancing their operational awareness.
This system is being provided to Port Users and service providers at no cost. Any unregistered/untagged vehicles will be designated as a temporary or infrequent vehicle, and as such will have to obtain a temporary tag issued from the gate house at Pier 9 or 17.

Summary of Benefits to Port Users & Service Providers
Improved monitoring of your company’s vehicles on SJPA facilities accessible by you will allow you to enhance your operational awareness.
The RFID system will provide you with near real-time data including: which of your vehicles are on site, the specific piers where they are, their time of arrival and departure, their total time on site, the specific piers where they are, their time of arrival and departure, their total time on site and the frequency of visits.
The data will be accessible via a web portal that will allow you – and only you – to review, reconcile and analyze data pertaining to your fleet.
The ability to accurately monitor the coming and going of vehicles and overall Port activity is common practice for such a large site which sometimes involves high-risk industrial activity. Risk reduction for our Port Users is an important benefit of the RFID system.
